«Swing dance» is a type of dance that developed with the swing style of jazz music in the 1920s-1940s, with the origins of each dance predating the popular «swing era». During the swing era, there were hundreds of styles of swing dancing, but those that have survived beyond that era include: Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, and Lindy Charleston. Today, the most well-known of these dances is the Lindy Hop, which originated in Harlem in the early 1930s. While the majority of swing dances began in African American communities as vernacular African American dances, a swing era dance, like Balboa, developed outside of these communities.

Black Bottom is, since December 2012, a swing dance school in Valencia, formed by a group of friends with a common hobby: music, dance and culture of the 20s, 30s and 40s. Their main activity is focused on the Lindy Hop and the Charleston, two of the most popular dance styles within swing music. Miguel Cozar, Lucía Galiana and Paloma Marques are members of this school and will come to Gençana to share with us the spirit of this lively and joyful dance.

Students of 1st Baccalaureate will enjoy in this workshop as a complementary activity of the didactic unit “LITERARY CARNIVAL PROJECT”.

Finally, we would like to express our gratitude for the collaboration of Ampa Jacaranda in the realization of these workshops.
